I’ve spent 25+ years working as a licensed Private Investigator, and before that, 10+ years as a police officer, including time with Sacramento PD. In that time, I’ve seen identity theft up close — not as a headline, but as something that quietly wrecks people’s finances, their credit, and sometimes their sense of safety in their own name.

What surprised me most, even after decades in this field, is how avoidable so much of it is. Most victims didn’t make some obvious mistake. Their information was simply out there — sitting on data broker sites, people-search databases, and public records aggregators — waiting for the wrong person to find it.
